Background: Dental erosion is the progressive loss of dental hard tissue by chemical processes without involving bacteria. Dental erosion has become a global problem with a fairly high incidence rate in various age groups, one of which is university students. Research data on dental erosion in Indonesian students is still limited because of the low awareness. Objective: To determine the occurrence of dental erosion in Marine Science students of Sriwijaya University by identifying the influence of intrinsic factor (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) and extrinsic factors (dietary habits, oral care habits, and swimming habits). Methods: Analytical descriptive research with a cross sectional design conducted at the Indralaya Dentistry and Oral Medicine Section building, Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University. The research subjects were selected using purposive sampling with total of 60 subjects Marine Science students of Sriwijaya University aged 18-20 years old, and Chi-Square, Kolmogorov-Smirnov, and Kruskal-Wallis analytic test. Primary data obtained from oral clinical examination and questionnaires about GERD, dietary habits, oral care habits, and swimming habits. Results: There were 80% of research subjects who had dental erosion influenced (p = 0.027) by intrinsic factor, while extrinsic factors had no influence (p > 0,05) on dental erosion. Conclusion: Most of the Marine Science students of Sriwijaya University have dental erosion, there was a significant influence between intrinsic factor on dental erosion, and there was no significant influence between extrinsic factors on dental erosion.
