EFEK MENGUNYAH PERMEN JELI BUAH NANAS (Ananas comosus) TERHADAP pH SALIVA MAHASISWA KEDOKTERAN GIGI UNSRI
Background: Dental caries can occur as a result of acidic salivary pH. Mechanical stimulation through chewing jelly candies containing natural ingredients such as pineapple may serve as an alternative to prevent this condition. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of chewing pineapple fruit (Ananas comosus) jelly candies on salivary pH. Methods: This was an experimental study using one group pretest-posttest design involving 30 subjects who were instructed to chew pineapple jelly candies and non-pineapple jelly candies sweetened with stevia. A 5 ml saliva sample was collected before and after chewing using the spitting method. Salivary pH was measured using a digital pH meter. Data were analyzed using a paired t-test. Results: There was a significant increase in salivary pH after chewing both pineapple and non-pineapple jelly candies compared to before chewing (p0,05). Conclusion: Chewing pineapple fruit (Ananas comosus) jelly candies can increase salivary pH.
