Mangupa Upa in the Batak cultural tradition can be interpreted as a request and advice given byparents or prominent figures. The aim of this research is to find out social construction and findout the meaning of the results of social construction of symbols in the Mangupa Ceremony as aBatak Tradition. This research uses a qualitative method with a qualitative descriptive type. Thedata collection techniques used in this research were interviews, observation and documentation.The examination and validity techniques used in this research are source triangulation, datatriangulation and method triangulation. The theoretical perspective used is the semiotic theory ofCharles Sanders Pierce. The research results show that semiotics in the symbols of the mangupaceremony is to find the meaning contained in each symbol or sign in the Toba Batak traditionalmangupa ceremony, which connects reality with three basic types of symbols, namely signs as amaterial, analysis where the sign contains meaning as a form of interpretation of the intendedmessage. This has meaning for the people who carry out traditional ceremonies and for the generalpublic. Keywords: Semiotics, symbols, Mangupa Ceremony, social construction, Toba Batak tribetraditions.
