Dissimilar metal welding is an important technique in the manufacturing industry to join dissimilar materials. ASTM A36 carbon steel and 316 stainless steel are two common types of materials used in various applications. Dissimilar metal welding between A36 and SS 316 presents challenges due to the differences in their physical and mechanical properties. This study aims to analyze the effect of welding current on the physical and mechanical characteristics of Dissimilar Metal welding ASTM A36 and SS 316 using E316-16 Electrode. This research uses an experimental method with variations in current strength in the range of 60 A, 70 A, and 80 A. The tests carried out in this study are dye penetrant testing, impact testing, optical microscope observation and hardness testing. The results showed that variations in current strength had a significant effect on the physical and mechanical properties of welded joints, higher welding currents resulted in higher hardness. This is indicated by the presence of some defects in the dye penetrant test and affects the toughness of the weld area in the impact results. High welding currents are directly proportional to heat input, which can cause the weld metal to melt and solidify quickly. Smaller grains will form many grain boundaries. Grain boundaries act as barriers to dislocation movement, which is the cause of decreased hardness of the material. Small grains have a fine microstructure leading to increased strength and hardness of the material. So 80 A current is most suitable to be used for Dissimilar Metal Welding ASTM A36 and SS 316 by SMAW method using E316-16 Electrode. Keywords: Dissimilar Metal Welding, ASTM A36, SS 316, E316-16, Welding Current, Physical Properties, Mechanical Properties
