PERAWATAN ORTODONTI MENGGUNAKAN CLEAR ALIGNER DAN ORTODONTI CEKAT PADA MALOKLUSI ANGLE KELAS I (NARRATIVE REVIEW)
Background: Class I malocclusion is the most common malocclusion type worldwide, with a reported prevalence of approximately 61% among adolescents aged 13-15 years. In Indonesia, it ranks third among oral and dental health problems. Malocclusion treatment often used in Indonesia is a fixed orthodontic appliance as much as 81.5%. However, fixed appliances have limitations in terms of aesthetics and comfort. As a result, clear aligners have emerged as an alternative treatment option, offering potential improvements in these areas. Objective: To compare orthodontic treatment using clear aligners and fixed orthodontics in class I malocclusion. Methods: This narrative review was conducted using data from Google Scholar, PubMed, and ResearchGate for the past 10 years (June 2015 - August 2025). Results: A total of 13 journals were analyzed. Four studies reported no statistically significant differences in Peer Assessment Rating (PAR) scores between clear aligner therapy and fixed orthodontic treatment. Two studies indicated that patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment experienced higher Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores, reflecting greater discomfort, compared to those treated with clear aligners. Three studies found that clear aligner therapy was associated with reduced root resorption relative to fixed appliances. Additionally, two studies reported improved periodontal tissue conditions in patients treated with clear aligners. Finally, two studies indicated that the overall treatment duration was shorter with clear aligners than with fixed orthodontic appliances. Conclusion: Both clear aligner and fixed orthodontic treatments can treat class I malocclusion cases.
