Gender equality is one of the goals in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda, aimed at providing equal opportunities for men and women in the social, political, and economic spheres. The Gender Development Index (GDI) and Gender Empowerment Index (GEI) are indicators used to measure aspects of gender equality. Developing countries, including Indonesia, continue to face various challenges. Data from the South Sumatra Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) shows that the level of gender inequality in the province during the 2018-2023 period remains relatively high, with an average Gender Inequality Index (GII) of 0.518. The disparity between regions is also quite significant, with Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir Regency recording the highest GII value in 2021 at 0.858, while Palembang City registered the lowest GII value in 2018 at 0.329. This study aims to analyse the effects of the Gender Development Index and Gender Empowerment Index on the Gender Inequality Index in South Sumatra Province during the 2018-2023 period. The approach used in this research is a quantitative method, with secondary data obtained from BPS South Sumatra. The type of data used is panel data, which combines time series and cross-sectional data. The results show that, partially, the Gender Development Index (GDI) has a negative but insignificant effect on the Gender Inequality Index (GII), while the Gender Empowerment Index (GEI) has a negative and significant effect on the GII. Simultaneously, the GDI and GEI have a negative and significant effect on the GII, indicating that enhancing both development and gender empowerment can reduce gender inequality in South Sumatra Province.
