KOMUNIKASI ANTARBUDAYA DALAM MENGHADAPI FENOMENA CULTURE SHOCK PADA MAHASISWA ASAL PAPUA ANGKATAN 2022 DAN 2023 DI UNIVERSITAS SRIWIJAYA
This study aimed to find out how intercultural communication occurred in dealing with the phenomenon of culture shock among Papuan students from the 2022 and 2023 cohorts at Sriwijaya University. William B. Gudykunst’s Intercultural Communication Theory, specifically Anxiety/Uncertainty Management (AUM) with its seven superficial causes, served as the theoretical framework for this research. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method, using in-depth interviews and observations as data collection techniques. The findings showed that Papuan students went through the stages of culture shock: optimism, crisis, recovery, and adjustment. However, both effective and ineffective intercultural communication were found in this study. Effective communication was supported by the concept of reducing anxiety and uncertainty, as well as continuous interactions, which accelerated the adaptation process. Ineffective communication resulted from barriers such as language and accent, which could not be minimized, and a lack of motivation to interact with foreign individuals, which was crucial for maintaining harmonious relationships within the Sriwijaya University campus environment. Keywords: Anxiety Uncertainty Management (AUM), Culture Shock, Intercultural Communication, Papuan Students
