PENERAPAN TINDAKAN SUCTION PADA PASIEN PNEUMONIA DENGAN PENURUNAN KESADARAN YANG MEMILIKI MASALAH KEPERAWATAN BERSIHAN JALAN NAPAS TIDAK EFEKTIF
Introduction: Pneumonia is a respiratory infection with inflammation of the air sacs in one or both lungs caused by infectious agents such as bacteria, viruses, or fungi. In pneumonia patients with decreased consciousness, the cough reflex becomes weakened or absent, so secretions cannot be expelled spontaneously. This increases the risk of airway obstruction, hypoventilation, and decreased oxygen saturation. Procedure to handle these conditions can be carried out through intubation, the use of ventilators, oxygen therapy, and suction. The nursing care using suction aims to clear secretions from the airways to maintain airway patency. Objective: To describe the implementation of suction procedure for pneumonia patients with decreased consciousness and ineffective airway clearance problem. Method: This study used a descriptive case approach involving three pneumonia patients with decreased consciousness and ineffective airway clearance problem in the PICU of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital, Palembang. Open and close suction interventions were administered for three consecutive days, with ten procedures performed per shift. Results: After suction intervention was given to the three patients for three days, airway clearance increased, indicated by decreased sputum production, improved respiratory rate, and increased oxygen saturation of the patients. Discussion: The suction intervention can be carried out to remove secretions in the airway, maintain adequate oxygenation patency, and improve oxygen saturation. It is effective in maintaining airway clearance and increasing oxygen saturation of pneumonia patients with decreased consciousness and ineffective airway clearance problem.
