REPRESENTASI PEMBUNGKAMAN KORBAN PELECEHAN SEKSUAL PADA TOKOH UTAMA DALAM FILM PENYALIN CAHAYA (2021)
Sexual harassment within academic institutions was frequently suppressed, with victims being silenced to preserve the institution's reputation and safeguard the perpetrators. Victim silencing in film Penyalin Cahaya was depicted through the character of Suryani, who attempted to seek truth and justice regarding her scholarship issues. This study aimed to analyze the representation of victim silencing as portrayed in Penyalin Cahaya. The data were obtained from 6 selected film scenes and documentation using a qualitative research method. This research utilized Muted Group Theory, reinforced by Umberto Eco’s semiotic framework and his theory of deception, which examined signification, interpretation, and the political constraints of cultural codes. The results of this study indicate that victim silencing in Penyalin Cahaya contained elements of Muted Group Theory, including control, ridicule, ritual, and violence. The film also highlighted the role of male-dominated in institutions, such as Netcar, the university, the ethics council, and Suryani’s father, in reinforcing the patriarchal system that silenced Suryani as a victim of sexual harassment to maintain the reputation of a particular group.
