Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuide) or fall armyworm is an important pest of cultivated plants, especially from the Graminae group, which causes yield losses reaching 100%. Mass breeding of S. frugiperda as an important test insect is carried out to study the life cycle, bioecology, feeding habits, susceptibility and resistance to chemical compounds. Mass cultures of S. frugiperda are maintained using artificial feed that is made to last as long as possible and is as nutritionally similar as possible to the host plant. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of artificial feed with different shelf life on the growth and development of S. frugiperda larvae. This research was carried out at the Entomology Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sriwijaya using a Randomized Block Design (RBD), with 3 shelf life treatments, namely 1 month, 2 months and 3 months with seven types of artificial feed, namely corn leaves (Zea mays L.), wild kale leaves (Ipomoea aquatica Forssk), kale leaves (Ipomoea reptans L.), mulberry (Morus rubra Lour), wild spinach (Amaranthus hybridus L.), setaria grass (Setaria sphacelata Schumach.) and kolonjono grass (Brachiaria mutica Forssk.). The variables observed included larval body weight, larval feces weight, last instar larval body length, percentage of larvae becoming pupae and pupae becoming imago, pupa weight and length, body length and wing span of imago, number of eggs laid, number of eggs that hatched, development time and efficiency value of artificial feed. It is hoped that the new research can become an alternative feed for S. frugiperda from plants with different shelf life. The research results showed that the highest larval body weight parameters were obtained by the spinach feed treatment. The highest manure weight parameters were obtained by spinach and setaria grass. The average larval life cycle between treatments is 3-4 days with the late cycle obtained from artificial feed from kolonjono grass. The average parameters of pre-pupa duration are 2-3 days, pupa duration 7-9 days. The parameter for the highest number of eggs laid by females was in the spinach treatment, namely 121.53 eggs/female. The percentage of eggs hatching was not significantly different and eggs successfully hatched above 92.18%. The conclusion of this research is that artificial feed is an alternative food for mass breeding of S. fugirperda larvae on a laboratory scale for test insect purposes. Artificial feeds with different shelf lives have varying characteristics. The shelf life of 1 month, 2 months and 3 months does not have a real effect so that artificial feed can still be used efficiently for 3 months. The artificial feed that best supports the growth and development of S. frugiperda larvae is artificial feed from wild spinach (Amaranthus hybridus) followed by setaria grass (Setaria sphacelate) while the lowest is artificial feed from kolonjono grass (Brachiaria mutica).
