AKOMODASI KOMUNIKASI MAHASISWA UNIVERSITAS SRIWIJAYA PADA PROGRAM PERTUKARAN MAHASISWA MERDEKA BATCH 3 DI UNIVERSITAS PADJADJARAN
The Merdeka Student Exchange program at Padjadjaran University offers students from universities outside Java the opportunity to study outside their campus environment for one semester. Sriwijaya University has also sent students to participate in the program. There is an identification of problems based on cultural differences, communication styles, and university culture that become obstacles in the adaptation process of inbound students. This research, based on Howard Giles' Communication Accommodation Theory (1973). The method in this research uses a phenomenological study. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with four main informants and two supporting informants. Convergence findings in this study include adjustment to the new environment, tolerance, a desire to learn about the new culture, and the view that adjustment is something that should exist and is very helpful in the exchange process. However, they also found divergence, as the students made efforts to introduce and maintain their original culture. The findings of excessive accommodation in this study are not in physical limitations, but differences in character and age of interlocutors. The research concludes that students from Sriwijaya University tend to use a convergence communication accommodation style, adjusting their culture, customs, and habits to the local culture, both verbally and nonverbally.
