SIFAT FISIK KACANG KEDELAI (Glycine max L.) DI LINGKUNGAN LEMBAB
Soybean (Glycine max L.) is an important agricultural commodity in Indonesia that is widely used as food, animal feed, and industrial raw materials. National soybean production is still far below demand, so Indonesia relies on large imports. One of the factors that affects soybean production and quality is environmental conditions, especially air humidity. South Sumatra has high air humidity, averaging 80%, which has the potential to affect the physical properties of soybeans, including size, weight, and storage capacity. This study aims to measure the physical properties of soybeans in a humid environment that are useful for optimal post-harvest storage handling. The study was conducted from December 1, 2024 to March 20, 2025 at the Biosystems Laboratory, Department of Agricultural Technology, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. The method used in this study is an experimental method with a quantitative approach. This study is a simulation of the process of water vapor absorption from the air into the material by soaking it in a measured manner and the measurement data is displayed in the form of tables and graphs. The results showed that increasing water content caused significant changes in physical properties in the dimensions and diameter, volume, and surface area of soybean seeds. In addition, the roundness of the seeds increased, showing a shape that was closer to perfect roundness. Bulk density and actual density also changed due to soaking. The total mass of the seeds increased due to soaking and resulted in changes in the physical properties of the seeds. The bulk angle increased with higher water content, which affected the stability of soybeans in humid conditions. Therefore, the results of this study can be a basis for helping farmers or villagers in planning optimal storage of agricultural products which are useful for maintaining product quality for a longer period of time.
