GAMBARAN KEBUTUHAN PERAWATAN ORTODONTI PADA SISWA KELAS VII SMPN 9 PALEMBANG MENGGUNAKAN DENTAL AESTHETIC INDEX
World Health Organization (WHO) considered malocclusion to be the third most important oral health problem after tooth decay and gum disease. Based on the research result by the Health Research and Development Department, Ministry of Health Republic Indonesia, the highest malocclusion prevalence in children aged 12-15 years q\was 15.6%. The age of 12 years was the most complex period of dental development due to occlusion formation and the time when malocclusion was most likely to occur. To determine the overview of orthodontic treatment needs in seventh grade students of SMPN 9 Palembang. A descriptive observational study was conducted with a survey design. The population consisted of 420 students, and the total sample was 289 students using total sampling technique. Research data were obtained from clinical examinations using the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI). The overview of orthodontic treatment needs in seventh-grade students of SMPN 9 Palembang using DAI showed 202 children (67.8%) needed orthodontic treatment and 96 children (32.2%) did not needed treatment. The highest prevalence of Angle malocclusion was Class I (47%) affecting 140 children, and then sequentially was Class III (39.9%) affecting 119 children. The lowest prevalence was Class II (13.1%) affecting 39 children. Conclusion: 67.8% (202) of seventh-grade students at SMPN 9 Palembang needed orthodontic treatment.
