Romaine lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is a leafy vegetable belong to Asteraceae family. One of the efforts to increase romaine lettuce productivity is by understanding the optimal growing conditions. The transplanting time for romaine lettuce also affected the growth. By carrying out good cultivation practices, good and maximum results are expected. This research was aimed to identify the ideal shade intensity and transplanting time for romaine lettuce growth. This study was conducted in Jakabaring District (104o46’4” E; 3o01’35” S), Palembang, South Sumatra, from June to August 2023. The research was adopted split plot design with 2 factors as treatment. The main plot was different shading with 4 shade densities, and the transplanting time was determined as a subplot with 3 levels of transplanting time. The main plot was different shading (N) consisted of 4 shading densities, namely: N0 = No shading, N1 = 45% shading, N2 = 55% shading, N3 = 80% shading. The subplot was the transplanting time (T) consisting of 3 levels, namely: T1 = 10 day after seedling (DAS), T2 = 15 day after seedling (DAS), T3 = 20 day after seedling (DAS). The data obtained were analyzed using the variance test and LSD 5% test. The result showed that the 0% shading (N0) treatment showed the highest value in plant growth and yield, namely in the parameters of leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, leaf number, leaf thickness, canopy diameter, canopy area, SPAD value, leaf fresh weight, stem fresh weight, root fresh weight, leaf dry weight, stem dry weight, and root dry weight. Meanwhile, the transplanting time of 10 DAS (T1) showed the highest values for plant growth and yield, namely the parameters of leaf thickness, leaf fresh weight, stem fresh weight, root fresh weight, leaf dry weight, and stem dry weight.
