PEMANFAATAN KARBON AKTIF DARI BAN BEKAS SEBAGAI ADSORBEN UNTUK PENGOLAHAN AIR LIMBAH PABRIK SLAB/LUMP BERDASARKAN WAKTU KONTAK DAN pH
This research uses waste tire powder to obtain carbon black which will be used as an adsorbent. This study aims to utilize carbon black from waste tire powder as an adsorbent to reduce COD and total ammonia in slab/lump factory wastewater. Waste tire powder, which contains 22-28% carbon black, is converted into activated carbon through pyrolysis and activation with 2M H₂SO₄. Characterization using SEM and XRD showed agglomerated morphology and a typical carbon diffraction pattern. The adsorption process was carried out with variations in contact time of 30, 60, and 90 minutes and pH 5, 6, and 7. The results showed that the optimum conditions for COD reduction occurred at a contact time of 90 minutes and pH 5 with an efficiency of 74.801%, while for total ammonia, an efficiency of 60.180% was achieved at a contact time of 60 minutes and pH 5. The adsorption capacities of COD and ammonia in a balanced state were 66.722; 60.000; and 59.110 mg/g and 14.690; 11.643; and 10.227 mg/g at pH 5, 6, and 7, respectively. The adsorption kinetics model followed a pseudo first order model. This study shows that activated carbon from scrap tire powder is effective in reducing COD and total ammonia in slab/lump mill effluent, thus offering an innovative solution for effluent treatment and mitigation of the environmental impact of waste tires.
