The South Sumatra region has a large number of residents so that agricultural land is getting narrower and causes a shortage of land in vegetable cultivation. To support the growth of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), different shade intensities and doses of NPK fertilizer are used. This study aims to gain an understanding related to the response of growth and yield of grand rapids lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) to variations in shade intensity and doses of NPK fertilizer. This study used a Split Plot Design. The observation results were analyzed using ANOVA test. The main plot factor is the variety of shade intensity consisting of N0 = Control, N1 = 50%, N2 = 75%, and N3 = 90% and the sub-plot factor consists of P1 = 1.125 grams of NPK/polybag, P2 = 2.25 grams of NPK/polybag and P3 = 3.375 grams of NPK/polybag. Each treatment was repeated 3 times and each replicate consisted of 2 plants. So the total number of plants used in this study was 72 experimental polybags. The parameters observed in this study were daily leaf length, daily leaf width, length to width ratio, plant height, number of leaves, leaf length, leaf width, stalk length, leaf canopy area, leaf fresh weight, leaf dry weight, root fresh weight, root dry weight, stem fresh weight, stem dry weight, root length and leaf greenness level. The results showed that the use of different shade intensities gave an unfavorable response to the growth and development of grand rapids lettuce. Good growth of grand rapids lettuce in almost all parameters except plant height, stalk length and leaf length were found in the treatment without using shade (N0). The application of NPK fertilizer at a dose of 2.25 g/polybag (P2) gave a significant effect on all parameters except the length of the lettuce stalk. Based on the results of the research, grand rapids lettuce should be cultivated on open land without using shading to get optimal results.
