EVALUASI PENGGUNAAN PESTISIDA PADA TANAMAN HORTIKULTURA OLEH PETANI DI DESA MUARA HARAPAN, KABUPATEN MUARA ENIM, SUMATERA SELATAN

Pesticides are chemical compounds used to control pests, including insects, rodents, fungi, and unwanted plants (weeds). Of the 2.5 million tons of pesticides used on crops, less than 0.1% effectively reach the target pests, while the remaining 99.9% are released into the environment, negatively impacting public health, beneficial organisms, and contaminating soil, water, and ecosystems. The objective of this study was to evaluate farmers' pesticide compliance scores, their knowledge categories, the percentage and intensity of pest and disease attacks, as well as the correlation between pesticide compliance scores and pest and disease parameters. This research was conducted on horticultural farmers' land in Muara Enim Regency, South Sumatra Province, from September to December 2024. The method employed in the study was a questionnaire survey involving 30 respondents. Interview results revealed that the average educational level of farmers was elementary school, with an average age of over 62 years. The average land area they managed was less than 0.25 hectares, with long beans being the most commonly grown crop. Field observations recorded a total insect population of 4,632 individuals. Farmers' compliance with pesticide use fell into the moderate category, with an average score of 389.7. Although many farmers were aware of the appropriate types, timing, and methods of pesticide application, actual implementation in farming activities remained low. The correlation between pesticide compliance scores and the intensity and percentage of pest and disease attacks was found to be very weak, with values of 0.061 and 0.042 for pests and 0.081 and 0.033 for diseases. These findings indicate that the pesticide use compliance has a minimal effect on reducing the intensity and percentage of pest and disease attacks.
