Oil palm plantations have potential as a source of forage for cattle. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential of forage for cattle in oil palm plantations in Sungai Lilin, Musi Banyuasin. The research was conducted from October to November 2023 in the oil palm plantation area of Sungai Lilin, Animal Nutrition and Food Laboratory, Animal Husbandry Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. The method used in this study was the Actual Weight Estimation method, namely sampling using a 1 x 1 m sampling plot. The parameters observed were vegetation types, botanical composition, fresh weight production, dry matter production, and carrying capacity in oil palm plantation areas. 40 samples were taken in 4 zones, namely, zone 1 in Linggo Sari Village, zone 2 in Mulyorejo Village, zone 3 in Nusa Serasan Village, and zone 4 in Sukadamai Baru Village. The data analysis used is descriptive-qualitative. The results showed that 21 types of vegetation were found. The most dominant forage species were Kremah (Alternanthera sessilis L.), Israel grass (Asystasia gangetica), and Jemarak grass (Setaria plicata). The botanical composition consists of 16 types of grasses (81,76%), 1 type of legume (2,03%), and 4 types of other plants (16,21%). Fresh weight production in the oil palm plantation area of Sungai Lilin Sub-district is 61 tons/ha with an average forage fresh weight production of 0,51 tons/ha in one harvest. The area of oil palm plantations in Sungai Lilin Sub-district is 3.602 ha and has the capacity to accommodate 0,46 ST.ha-1 .year-1 , meaning it can accommodate 1.656,92 ST.ha-1 .year-1 . The number of cattle is 492 heads, so it can still accommodate adult cattle around 1.164,92 ST.ha-1 .year-1 . Based on these results, it proves that oil palm plantations are very capable of meeting the needs of forage for cattle.
