PREPARASI MEMBRANE ELECTRODE ASSEMBLY (MEA) DENGAN ANODA Pt/C DAN KATODA SnO2-TiO2/C BINCHOTAN SEBAGAI ELEKTROKATALIS DAN APLIKASINYA PADA DIRECT METHANOL FUEL CELL (DMFC)
This research focuses on enhancing DMFC performance by developing alternative catalysts to replace platinum, such as SnO₂ supported on TiO₂ and carbon materials. MEA preparation includes the fabrication of GDLs and catalyst layers. Materials and MEA performance were tested using various methods (including particle size, hydrophobicity tests, XRD, SEM, FTIR, and CV, which was used to calculate the electrochemical active surface area or Electrochemical Surface Area (ECSA). MEA performance testing with variations in methanol concentration (5-20%) and current load (0.1-0.6 A) was analyzed through polarization curves (I-V and I-P). The research shows that binchotan carbon powder has non-uniform but stable characteristics. Characterization (Hydrophobicity, XRD, SEM) of the SnO₂-TiO₂/C (binchotan and vulcan) catalyst layers revealed differences in properties and structure. Additionally, the vulcan carbon-based catalyst yielded the highest ECSA value of 7.280391 cm²/gram, and the MEA performance test results showed that SnO₂-TiO₂/C vulcan 70:30 produced the highest voltage of 4.1 mV at a methanol percentage of 10%, and the highest power density of 2940 mW was obtained by MEA SnO₂-TiO₂/C vulcan 30:70 at 5% methanol. Further research can explore smaller variations in the SnO₂-TiO₂ composition (e.g., 60:40, 50:50, 40:60) for DMFC performance optimization.
