ANALISIS BUANG AIR BESAR SEMBARANGAN (BABS) MASYARAKAT PINGGIRAN SUNGAI AIR MANNA DUSUN SUKANANTI DESA KOTA BUMI KECAMATAN PINO KABUPATEN BENGKULU SELATAN
Open Defecation (OD) remains a significant environmental health issue in Indonesia, including among the riverbank communities of the Air Manna River in Dusun Sukananti. This study aims to analyze the factors influencing OD behavior despite the availability of latrine facilities. A qualitative method with a descriptive approach was used. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and Focus Group Discussions (FGD) involving 11 primary informants, village leaders, and health workers. The findings revealed that OD behavior is influenced by economic factors, social and cultural values, and longstanding traditions. Although sanitation facilities are available, low awareness levels, ingrained habits, and budget constraints for latrine maintenance serve as the main barriers. Furthermore, the river’s multifunctionalhh use as a social interaction space reinforces the community’s attachment to these practices. Interventions such as sanitation education, construction of healthy latrines, and enhanced roles of health workers and village governments are necessary to change community behavior. This study recommends more intensive sanitation education programs and subsidized sanitation facilities to improve accessibility. Collaboration between the government, health workers, and the community is essential to reduce OD practices and improve environmental quality and public health.
