The neutrality and geopolitical centrality of the ASEAN countries is a major issue for the Indo-Pacific region, especially Southeast Asia, in the face of great power competition between the United States and China. The rise of China both in the economic and military spheres accompanied by tight competition with the United States, has presented two different views within ASEAN. The inclination of ASEAN countries towards these two powers has weakened ASEAN's centrality and leadership in the region. Attention needs to be paid to this condition. Indonesia as a natural leader that has a free and active political foundation is an example of this issue. This research uses a qualitative method with the use of secondary data derived from journals, books, websites, news portals and laws. This research uses Andrew Cottey and Anthony Forster's Defense Diplomacy theory through 3 dimensions. The results of this study show that Indonesia has performed its role as a natural leader in an effort to enhance the centrality of ASEAN. This is far from the Indonesian strategic engagement dimension that has embraced ASEAN countries in terms of military transparency and military cooperation involving big nations. In the context of democratic civil-military relations, Indonesia has applied the rule of law and democratic values to every defense policy draft that is consistent with human rights values. It's an example for ASEAN and its countries. Furthermore, these elements are driving the presence of peacekeeping capabilities that are useful for building capacity for peace and security in the region. In the end, ASEAN is able to be the epicenter for the big nations to create and maintain regional peace. Keywords: United States, China, Indonesia, ASEAN Defence Diplomacy, Centrality, Contestation.
