This research aims to develop a membrane that can improve clean water supply, especially in areas that lack water sources. This research focuses on the use of Polyethersulfone (PES) as a membrane manufacturing material due to its good mechanical properties and thermal stability, as well as the addition of Silver Nitrate (AgNO3) to improve membrane performance in water filtration. The objectives of this study include the development of membranes with a mixture of PES and AgNO3, analysis of membrane durability through surface modification using the Electric Field method, and analysis of the microstructure and maximum tensile stress of the membrane. The methodology used in this study involved mixing PES, DMF, and AgNO3 with varying concentrations, followed by testing using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), tensile test, and Clean Water Permeability (CWP). The results showed that the membrane with 1.5% AgNO3 concentration had the highest tensile strength of 5.861 MPa, while the 2.5% concentration showed the lowest tensile strength of 2.477 MPa. CWP performance also showed a decrease in flux as the AgNO3 concentration increased, with the highest flux at a concentration of 1.5% reaching 4.422 L/m².h.bar. SEM observations revealed that the membrane with a concentration of 1.5% had a larger pore size and smoother surface compared to the 2.5% concentration indicating agglomeration. The conclusion of this study is that the addition of AgNO3 to PES membrane can affect the mechanical properties and performance of the membrane in water filtration, where higher concentration of AgNO3 tends to decrease the tensile strength and filtration efficiency of the membrane. Surface modification with Electric Field proved to be effective in assisting better pore formation on the membrane. As a suggestion, it is recommended to use 1.5% AgNO3 concentration for optimal results, and further research is needed to evaluate the antibacterial ability of the resulting membrane.
