LAJU PERUBAHAN SIFAT FISIK PAPAN PARTIKEL BERBAHAN SEKAM PADI DENGAN PENAMBAHAN PARAFIN WAX SELAMA PENYIMPANAN
The objective of this research was to study the effect of storage conditions and storage times on the physical properties of changes of particle board and the rate of changes of physical properties. The research was conducted in Juni 2012 to Juni 2013 at Agricultural Technology Department, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Sriwijaya and at Laboratory of PT. Indonesia Fiberboard Industry, Bayung Lencir, Musi Banyuasin, South Sumatera. This research used a Factorial Block Randomized Design that consisted of two treatments as factors, and each factor consisted of two levels and seven levels, respectively. Each combination of treatment was replicated three times. The first factor was storage conditions (indoor : RH 83% - 85%, and outdoor : 87% - 91%) and the second factor was the storage times (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 weeks). The parameters were the moisture content, thickness swelling, and density. The research results showed that the storage condition and storage time had highly significant effect on the moisture content, thickness swelling and density while the interaction between the storage condition and storage time had highly significant effect on moisture content and thickness swelling, but had no significant effect on the density. The analysis of rate changes of physical properties of particle board (water content, the thickness swelling and density) in indoor and outdoor showed that the rate of changes was followed the first order kinetics of Arrhenius equation. The rate of changes of water content in indoor were 0.056% per week (the first 4 weeks) and 0.0031% per week (after 4 weeks), while in outdoor were 0.2% per week (the first week) and 0.017 % per week afterwards. The rate of changes of thickness swelling in indoor were 0.067% per week (the first 4 weeks) and 0.026% per week (after 4 weeks), while in outdoor were 0.114% per week (the first 3 weeks) and 0.0048% (after 3 weeks). The rate of changes of density in indoor were 0.0024 kg/m3 per week (the first 4 weeks) and 0.00019 kg/m3 per week (after 4 weeks), while in outdoor were 0.0065 kg/m3 per week (first week) and 0.0015 kg/m3 per week afterwards.
