Based on petrographic analysis, the research studies the limestone diagenesis of Ngrayong Member of the Tuban Formation, Kayen Region, Bancar District, Tuban Regency, East Java. Ngrayong a Member of the Tuban Formation is one of the formations included in the North East Java Basin. Regionally, the research area is included in the North East Java Basin. The limestone of Ngrayong a Member of the Tuban Formation has a characteristic brown color. This research was conducted to determine the composition of the rock and the type of diagenesis of limestone in the Kayen area and its surroundings. The study involved laboratory analyses, including petrographic and diagenetic analysis, and studio analysis which consisted of several stages including map creation and developing a diagenetic phase scheme for the limestone in the research area. The petrographic analysis aims to identify the mineral composition of the rock, the type of rock, and its name. In this study, (7) samples were analyzed, and the naming of the rocks was based on Dunham's classification (1962), supplemented by the classification of Embry and Klovan (1971). The study was conducted at seven observation sites, all with the same lithology, which is limestone. A total of 7 (seven) samples were obtained from the research location, which, based on the petrographic characteristics of the carbonate rocks such as fragments (skeletal grains and non-skeletal grains), matrix, and cement, indicate that the limestone in this study area is of the packstone type. Following the petrographic analysis stage, the next step is to undertake a diagenetic analysis of the rocks to identify the diagenetic processes and the environmental settings in the research area. The diagenetic analysis results suggest that the rocks in this area underwent diagenetic processes including microbial micritization, compaction, dissolution, cementation, and neomorphism. After analyzing the diagenetic processes of the rocks, the developing diagenetic environment can be identified based on the diagenetic environmental scheme according to Tucker and Wright (1990). The analysis of seven limestone samples from the research area reveals that three stages of diagenesis occur: eogenesis, mesogenesis, and telogenesis. The eogenesis stage occurs in a marine environment and is characterized by microbial micritization processes. The subsequent phase, mesogenesis, takes place in burial and meteoric environments, resulting in the rocks’ compaction, cementation, and neomorphism. The final stage, telogenesis, involves the uplift of rocks due to tectonic activity, characterized by dissolution in the limestone of the Ngrayong Member of the Tuban Formation. The diagenetic stages can determine, the diagenetic history of the limestone can be determined. The diagenetic history of the limestone from the Ngrayong Member of the Tuban Formation in the Kayen area began with deposition in a marine environment, followed by compaction due to younger sedimentation, placing the diagenetic environment in the burial zone. This was succeeded by an uplift process that exposed the limestone at the surface, moving the diagenetic environment into the meteoric zone. This study of the limestone from the Ngrayong Member of the Tuban Formation in the Kayen area is part of an effort to enrich information about the limestone in this area based on primary field data.
