Wind energy is an alternative to the use of fossil energy, where the use of fossil energy at this time can be said to be excessive and also the supply of fossil energy sources is increasingly depleted because fossil energy is a non-renewable energy source, therefore many people are looking for a replacement for generators that use fossil energy, one of which is using wind energy where this wind energy is renewable energy. Wind is produced through air movement caused by the rotation of the earth and differences in air pressure in the earth's atmosphere, one of the most commonly known wind power plants is a wind turbine, where the way this wind turbine works is to convert the kinetic energy produced from the rotation of the turbine due to wind into electrical energy. This wind turbine itself has two types, namely vertical and horizontal axis wind turbines, in general horizontal wind turbines are more often used because they have higher efficiency, but the use of this horizontal wind turbine requires a more complicated construction because it requires a large wind thrust, on the contrary, vertical wind turbines have a simpler construction because the construction of vertical wind turbines does not need to be perpendicular to the wind because vertical axis wind turbines can move from any wind direction, vertical axis wind turbines do not require strong gusts of wind to start the rotation of the turbine, but vertical axis wind turbines tend to produce less power therefore vertical axis wind turbines are more widely used for small-scale power sources such as in factories as power plants for a tool or as lighting. In this study, a vertical axis wind turbine with a Savonius model was used which added a deflector with several variations in the deflector angle to see the effect of the resulting deflector angle, this study also used 4 variations of wind. This research was conducted experimentally using a WT-40 Subsonic wind tunnel. The data taken included generator rotation (rpm) using a tachometer, voltage (V) and current (A) using a multimeter, and wind speed (m/s) using a digital anemometer. Testing was carried out at wind speeds of 5.5 m/s, 6 m/s, 7 m/s, and 8.5 m/s. Testing began with a deflector angle of 0°, then continued with a deflector angle of 30° and ended with 60°. In this study, the 0° angle produced the largest number with the power generated by the generator being 5.875 Watts at a wind speed of 8.5 m/s and a TSR of 1.952. And the smallest power was obtained at a 60° deflector angle, which was 0.252 Watts at a wind speed of 5.5 m/s and a TSR of 0.704. With these data, it can be concluded that the larger the deflector angle used, the smaller the results obtained.
