Interpersonal communication between athletes and coaches has an important role in improving athlete performance. The way trainers do this is by communicating face-to-face to understand each other and achieve common ground. This research aims to find out more about interpersonal communication between athletes and diving coaches in South Sumatra Province. The theory used in this research is Joseph DeVito's theory, using a humanistic approach, namely openness, empathy, supportive attitude, positive attitude, and equality. The research conducted was descriptive qualitative. The sampling technique used was purposive. Data collection techniques are interviews, participant observation, and documentation. Data analysis uses qualitative analysis. The results of this research are five aspects of the humanistic approach that play a good role. The most prominent aspect is a supportive attitude, while what needs to be improved is openness which can be an obstacle in communication between athletes and coaches. keywords: interpersonal communication, coach, athlete, diving
