The South China Sea conflict involves overlapping maritime claims between China and several Southeast Asian countries, such as the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Brunei, leading to geopolitical and economic tensions. As a global power, the United States (US) plays a key role in maintaining international freedom of navigation through its Freedom of Navigation Operations (FONOPs) in the region. The US's role is influenced by several factors, including domestic policy, economic interests, and international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). This research aims to analyze the impact of US foreign policy, particularly FONOPs, on the situation in the South China Sea and the economic, military, and international legal factors that influence decision-making in this context. The research approach uses international relations theory and international law, with a focus on UNCLOS, which governs freedom of navigation in international waters. The political decision-making theory is also applied to understand how the US formulates its foreign policy in the region. The research method is qualitative, with a descriptive analysis and case study, drawing on data from literature reviews, academic sources, government reports, and international documents related to US policy in the South China Sea. The research findings indicate that US decision-making regarding FONOPs is influenced by domestic political factors, military power, and global economic interests. While the US is committed to upholding freedom of navigation in accordance with international law, this policy increases tensions with China and may affect economic relations between the two countries.
