EFEK PENAMBAHAN EKSTRAK GAMBIR PADA PASTA GIGI TERHADAP PEWARNAAN GIGI
Background: Tooth discoloration is a process in which teeth experience discoloration or stains that make them appear darker or not white as usual. Tooth discoloration is caused by the entry of compounds in the form of pellicle, such as tea, coffee and tobacco onto the surface of the teeth enamel. Chemical whitening toothpastes are effective at removing stains but have side effects. The addition of herbal ingredients an alternative to minimize these side effects and improve the teeth whitening process, such as gambir (Uncaria gambir Roxb). Objective: To determine the effect of gambir toothpaste for 14 days on tooth discoloration. Method: 32 premolars were divided into 2 groups: Group A (toothpaste containing sodium bicarbonate), group B (gambir toothpaste), soaked in coffee solution for 14 days. Before treatment, an initial color measurement was carried out using an NH310® colorimeter. The sample was brushed in a mesio-distal direction for 4 minutes within 14 days, then soaked in artificial saliva and stored in an incubator at 37° C. After that, the color change was measured again. The statistical tests used are Paired t-test and Independent t-test. Results: Paired t-test results show that the total color change value (∆Eab*) for each group before and after treatment is significantly different. The results of the Independent t-test for value ∆Eab* after treatment showed that there were no significant differences between groups. Conclusion: The total value of color change after treatment with gambir toothpaste gives an equivalent effect compared to treatment with toothpaste containing sodium bicarbonate.
