Background. Shigellosis is a clinical condition caused by invasion of Shigella species in the epithelium lining the terminal ileum, colon and rectum. Efforts that can be made to treat shigellosis are using fluoroquinolone antibiotics. However, cases of resistance of patients infected by Shigella to fluoroquinolone antibiotics have been reported to have increased in the Southeast Asian. This study aims to determine the antibacterial power of ethanol extract of avocado leaves (Persea americana Mill.) against the growth of Shigella dysenteriae bacteria. Methods. This study is an in vitro laboratory experimental study. The test group used avocado leaf ethanol extract with concentrations of 4000 μg/ml, 2000 μg/ml, 1000 μg/ml, 500 μg/ml, and 250 μg/ml obtained through maceration method, ciprofloxacin 5 μg as positive control and DMSO as negative control. Testing the antibacterial power of avocado leaf ethanol extract against Shigella dysenteriae bacteria was carried out by disc diffusion method to determine the diameter of the inhibition zone, determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and antibiotic equivalence test. The results of the inhibition zone diameter were then analyzed statistically using one way ANOVA and Post Hoc Bonferroni. Results. The results of this study indicate that the 2000 μg/ml concentration of avocado leaf ethanol extract has the largest mean diameter of the inhibition zone, which is 9.57 mm, but is still lower than ciprofloxacin 5 μg. The MIC test results of avocado leaf ethanol extract were determined at a concentration of 500 μg/ml. Conclusion. Ethanol extract of avocado leaves (Persea americana Mill.) has antibacterial power against Shigella dysenteriae. Keywords. Antibacterial, avocado leaf, Persea americana Mill., Shigella dysenteriae.
