Synthesis of chitosan-Al2O3-Graphene oxide (GO) composite by sol gel method and its application with methylene blue has been conducted. This study was conducted to determine the ability of chitosan-Al2O3-GO composite in adsorbing methylene blue. Chitosan-Al2O3-GO composites were prepared with mass ratio (1:1), (1:2) and (1:3). These composites were characterized using XRD. The composite with the lowest particle size was further characterized using SEM-EDX, BET and applied in adsorbing methylene blue. The methylene blue adsorption process was carried out with several variables, namely the effect of pH, contact time and concentration. The results of XRD characterization of chitosan-Al2O3-GO composite (1:3) show 2θ angle peaks that have similarities to ICDD No. 00-046- 0943 data, namely at angles 31.58o , 35.59o , 37.60o , 43.03o , 52.23o and 66.22o . The particle size of the chitosan-Al2O3-GO (1:3) composite was determined based on the Debye Scherrer equation of 5.082 nm. SEM-EDX characterization results of chitosan-Al2O3-GO (1:3) composite showed a more porous composite morphology with the composition of constituent elements C, N, O and Al. Characterization results with BET obtained surface area of chitosan-Al2O3-GO (1:3) composite of 23.009 m2 /g. The optimum adsorption condition was obtained at pH 9, contact time of 50 minutes and concentration of 45 ppm with absorption capacity of 10.817 mg/g and absorption efficiency of 80.12%. The chitosan-Al2O3-GO composite in adsorbing methylene blue dye follows the Langmuir equation with a maximum adsorption capacity of methylene blue on the composite of 11,600 mg/g.
