Introduction: Diabetic retinopathy is a complication that occurs in patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus and is a major cause of vision loss. In proliferative diabetic retinopathy there are abnormal blood vessels in the retina. Patient with proliferative diabetic retinopathy can experience bleeding (vitreous hemorrhage) or retinal detachment, which can lead to blindness. To restore vision in patient with proliferative diabetic retinopathy, vitrectomy surgery can be performed to remove bleeding and bleeding tissue. Methods: This study used a descriptive observational method with a cross-sectional design to determine the changes in vision before and after vitrectomy surgery in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. Result: after vitrectomy, 9 out of 20 patients (45%) experienced a decrease in vision, 8 patients (40%) experienced an increase, and 3 patients (15%) experienced no change in vision. The patients who underwent vitrectomy were mostly in the age range of 18–59 years (85%) and the majority of them were female (70%). The visual acuity before vitrectomy was in the poor category for 85% of the patients, and after 1 week of vitrectomy 90% of the patients were still in the poor category. Conclusion: After vitrectomy, there was a decrease in vision for 45% of the patients and an increase in vision for 40% of the patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital in Palembang.
