In 2020–2022, total 787 patients were diagnosed with inguinal hernia at RSUP dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang, including lateral inguinal hernia. In various literatures, it is stated that physical workload is the most dominant risk factor among all risk factors for lateral inguinal hernia. This study aims to determine the relationship between physical workload and lateral inguinal hernia. This case control study uses secondary data from medical records of digestive surgery patients at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang period 1 January 2020–31 December 2022. The samples were patients diagnosed with lateral inguinal hernia as the case group and patients who were not diagnosed with lateral inguinal hernia as the control group. Sample selection was carried out using consecutive sampling method and matching process based on age range and body mass index. Data were analyzed univariately and bivariately with the Chi-square test. Odds ratio and confidence interval were calculated manually. There were 52 case groups and 104 control groups. There is a significant relationship (p value = 0.03) between lateral inguinal hernia and heavy physical workload. Patients with a heavy physical workload were 1.52 times more likely to experience a lateral inguinal hernia than patients with a light physical workload (CI 95% = 1.07–2.58). There is a relationship between physical workload and lateral inguinal hernia in surgical patients at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. General director of relevant agencies and employers need to provide workers’ routine health checks for early detection and identification of risk factors for lateral inguinal hernia as a preventive measure.
