This study aims to determine the profile of alternative concepts at the beginning of junior high school students' learning on the concept of photosynthesis in Palembang city. This research method is descriptive qualitative using the modified Treagust method. Data collection techniques use documentation, semi-structured interviews and open ended tests (free response). The material used is based on Campbell's biology book. The sample in this study was 430 junior high school students who had not received photosynthesis material using Stratified Cluster Random Sampling. The research results show that students have alternative concepts on all topics of photosynthesis. The most alternative concepts were in the first mayor's proposition was 67%, the second mayor's proposition was 62%, the third mayor's proposition was 58% and the third mayor's proposition was 53%. Alternative concepts possessed by students come from themselves, their families, and learning materials at school. This research is expected to provide an overview of teachers to apply appropriate methods, media, learning strategies and learning experiences to increase students' understanding regarding the concept of photosynthesis and reduce alternative concepts that occur in students.
