EFEKTIVITAS PEMBERIAN EKSTRAK BAWANG MERAH TERHADAP PENURUNAN KADAR GULA DARAH PADA TIKUS PUTIH YANG DI INDUKSI ALOKSAN
Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by the pancreas being unable to produce insulin or when the body cannot use insulin properly. This situation causes the body to experience hyperglycemia and can result in body damage and even organ and tissue failure. The main goal of therapy for diabetes mellitus sufferers is controlling blood sugar levels. Shallots (Allium cepa L) is an alternative management in the form of traditional medicine in treating diabetes mellitus patients. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of administering shallot extract (Allium cepa L) in reducing blood sugar levels in white rats (Rattus norvegicus) with diabetes mellitus induced by alloxan. Method: In vivo experimental research was carried out in October-November 2023 at the Animal House, Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University. Consisting of 5 treatment groups, namely negative group (distilled water), positive group (glibenclamide drug), group I (shallot extract 18 mg/kgBW), group II (shallot extract 36 mg/kgBW), and group III (shallot extract 72 mg/kgBW) orally with each group containing 6 Wistar rats. Data analysis using the Paired T test, Wilcoxon test, Independent T test, Mann Whitney test, one-way ANOVA test and PostHoc Test in the SPSS Statistics 22 application. Result: Rat blood sugar levels after alloxan induction (p=0.357) which means normal distribution (p>0.05). Group I (p=0.022), group II (p=0.012), group III (0.004) effectively reduced blood sugar levels on days 0 and 14. Group I (0.022), Group II (p=0.012), group III (p=0.004) effectively reduced the average blood sugar levels on days 0 and 14. The results showed that there were significant differences between group II and the negative group. The optimal dose for reducing blood sugar levels is in group II. Conclusion: There was an effect of reducing blood sugar levels after administering shallot extract (Allium cepa L) to white Wistar rats induced by alloxan. Keyword: Shallots (Allium cepa L), diabetes mellitus, decreased blood sugar levels, white rats (Rattus norvegicus).
