Pack carburizing is a heat treatment process which is used to harden the steel surface by using carbon content as a hardness enhancer. In this study using ST 40 steel as a test specimen, this steel is included in the low carbon steel. This study aims to see the effect of variations in gelam wood charcoal and coconut shell as carbon used in the pack carburizing process and to see the effect of variations in the water content contained in gelam wood and coconut shell charcoal on the hardness of steel. From the hardness test using the Vickers hardness test, the hardness value for pure specimens was 251.081 kgf/mm2. The highest hardness value in this pack carburizing process was obtained from a coconut shell charcoal specimen with a moisture content of 7% with a value of 347.756 kgf/mm2, followed by a specimen of gelam wood charcoal with a moisture content of 7% with a value of 313.696 kgf/mm2, a coconut shell charcoal specimen with a moisture content of 5% with a value of 304.884 kgf/mm2 and a specimen of gelam wood charcoal with a moisture content of 8% with a value of 285.979 kgf/mm2. It can be concluded that variations in gelam wood and coconut shell charcoal and the moisture content contained in the charcoal affect the hardness of the specimens.
