Background Exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life is crucial as the best source of nutrition for infant health and growth. However, the achievement of exclusive breastfeeding in Indonesia remains very low. One of the crucial factors in the success of exclusive breastfeeding is the prevailing sociocultural context within the community. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to elucidate the practice of exclusive breastfeeding based on sociocultural aspects among breastfeeding mothers in Seluma District. Method This study employs a qualitative approach with a phenomenological and social constructivist perspective, chosen to assume that life experiences are subjective and context-specific. The methodology includes in-depth interviews and focus group discussions (FGD) involving 29 informants, consisting of 13 key informants meeting the criteria of having theirfirst child aged 6-24 months, as well as triangulation informants, including husbands, parents/in-laws, healthcare workers, integrated postnatal care (Posyandu) cadres, and community leaders. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Research Results Based on the results of in-depth interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGD), the research findings revealed that out of 13 key informants, only a small portion provided exclusive breastfeeding. This was due to sociocultural factors within the community in Seluma District. The obstacles caused by socio-cultural factors that are frequently encountered, resulting in mothers not exclusively breastfeeding their infants until six months of age, stem from parental beliefs regarding the provision of food or fluids to newborns. Conclusion The success of exclusive breastfeeding in Seluma District is influenced by socio-cultural factors, where parents and in-laws play a significant role in influencing mothers in practicing exclusive breastfeeding.
