PERBEDAAN LAJU ALIR SALIVA SEBELUM DAN SETELAH DISTIMULASI DENGAN PENGUNYAHAN KURMA VARIETAS AJWA
Background: Decreased salivary flow rate can lead a decrease of oral clearance, which can disrupt oral health and increase the risks of diseases in the oral cavity, such as dental caries, periodontitis and fungal infections. Masticatory stimulation by chewing Ajwa dates could be an alternative to increase salivary flow rate. Aim: This study aimed to determine the differences of salivary flow rate before and after being stimulated by chewing Ajwa dates. Method: This experimental study with a one group pretest-posttest design consisted of 18 subjects. Subjects were instructed to chew 10 grams of Ajwa dates for 30 times. Saliva was collected before and after chewing Ajwa dates using spitting method every one minute for five minutes. Salivary flow rate was measured using centrifuge tube and expressed in ml/minute. Data were analyzed using paired T test. Result: The result showed that there was a significant difference between salivary flow rate before and after chewing Ajwa dates. Conclusion: Chewing Ajwa dates can increase the salivary flow rate. Keywords: dates, flow rate, chewing, saliva
