PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN THE TRANSITION TO UNIVERSITY OF THE FIRST SEMESTER ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDENTS OF FACULTY OF TEACHER TRAINING AND EDUCATION OF SRIWIJAYA UNIVERSITY
Parental involvement is very important especially for the students in the phase of facing the new transition from high school to university. However, parental involvement and the parents’ attention are reduced indirectly in children process of transition from high school into university. The research aimed to analyze the students’ perception on the effects of the parental involvement in their transition into university during their first semester of study. The data were collected by using interview and questionnaire via online, with a total of 98 students as respondents. All of the 98 students were asked to answer the questionnaire, then from 98 students twelve of them were asked to be the interviewee. The results of this research presented that the majority of the ninety eight students as participants to answer the questionnaire showed that although their parents gave them the autonomous to make their own decision, but the parents still involved and effected their transition. Students acknowledged that all eight statements mentioned about their parents’ role were consistent with the depiction of the role their parents had realized in their educational lives, And they also admitted that all the other eight statements about their condition during college were appropriate to them personally after undergoing their first year of study with the effect of their parents' involvement. Furthermore, the gained data from the interview also presented that all of the twelve students as participants of interview admitted that parental involvement affected their transition into college. Moreover, the main role of parental involvement in this research was as an observer and as a supporter. Keywords: Parental Involvement, transition to University
