Common brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. Common brass hardness is very important in the world of machinery, with quenching treatment will affect the mechanical properties of common brass. This study aims to determine the effect of the quenching process using oil coolers (viscosity variations) on the mechanical properties (hardness) of common brass metal. The quenching process was carried out by heating the common brass metal specimen to an austenitic temperature of 800˚C then cooled rapidly into various oils (15W-40), (20W-40), (10W-30) and (SAE 20W-50). Research results with Vickers hardness test. The highest value was 103.67 N/mm2 in specimen 1(10W-30); 98.23 N/mm2 in specimen 2 (15W-40); 99.88 N/mm2 in specimen 3 (SAE 20W–50). and 101.46 N/mm2 in specimen 4 (20W-40). In the study, the results obtained were the effect of oil viscosity on the quenching heat treatment affecting metal hardness, it was better to use an oil cooling medium (10W-40) and to decrease hardness, use an oil cooling medium (15W-40).
