Nowadays, Hydrogen is the most promising candidate for clean and sustainable energy. The calorific value of its combustion reaches 286 kJ/mol, at the same weight, the energy of hydrogen is three times greater than that of other fuels. Innovation in the development of hydrogen energy continues until it can be applied to the general public. Research on hydrogen production by utilizing proton exchange membranes and the principle of electrolysis (electrolytic PEM) using a Cu2O/C electrocatalyst has been carried out. Electrocatalysts are produced using mechanical alloying techniques to increase the surface area of the electrodes. Electrodes were characterized by Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) methods. CV characterization is used to determine the electrochemical properties of materials based on Electrochemical Surface Area (ECSA) values. The ECSA Cu2O/C value obtained was 3.621 m2/g. EIS characterization is used to determine the electrical conductivity of materials based on their electrical conductivity values. The Cu2O/C conductivity value obtained was 20.3 × 10-3 S/cm. Hydrogen production testing with PEM electrolysis was carried out with variations in monopolar and bipolar current flow patterns, current strength, and water temperature to determine the best results based on the value of the hydrogen production rate. The best current flow patterns are produced by bipolar configuration modules compared to monopolar ones, with a hydrogen production rate of 0.537 mL/s at a current of 1.5 A. The best electric current for a bipolar configuration module is produced at a current of 2 A, with a hydrogen production rate of 0.6902 mL/s. The best water temperature in the bipolar configuration module and 2 A current is produced at a water temperature of 70°C, with a hydrogen production rate of 1.3899 mL/s.
