WACANA ORIENTALISME DALAM FILM ELEMENTAL (ANALISIS SEMIOTIKA CHARLES SANDERS PEIRCE)
The interdisciplinary nature of International Relations focuses on expanding issues from high politics to low politics, including social issues such as racial discrimination against minority groups, particularly immigrants who are part of people of color (POC) communities. This discrimination is related to past colonialism and has given rise to perceptions of racial superiority. Xenophobia, which is the fear of people who are different or foreigners, is the term used to describe discrimination against immigrants. In the era of globalization with rapid technological and media advancement, media plays a crucial role in information dissemination. Media can have negative influences by promoting hate speech related to race and personal attacks. However, media also has a positive impact, such as advancing the anti-racism movement through films. The film industry, especially animated films under the auspices of The Walt Disney Company, attempt to depict representation of minority groups. However, stereotypes and inaccurate framing still exist. One of the films under scrutiny is Elemental, which tries to portray the experience of immigrants in search of a better life but facing discrimination and xenophobia. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method using observation and content analysis techniques. The aim is to identify aspects of orientalism in the animated film Elemental using Charles Sanders Peirce's theories of orientalism and semiotics. The findings support the conclusion that the film reflects orientalism in its depiction of characters inspired by certain cultural stereotypes, even though it does not explicitly depict the characters' races. Orientalism can be found in the interpretation of these figures. These stereotypes impact Elemental and are the main focus of this research.
