This study was conducted with yhe aim of knowing the of the main character’s inner conflict that occurred in the novel Maya and its implications in learning literature at school. The problem in this study is how the conflict is based on the type of inner conflict and the defense mechanism experienced by the main character. The data course is taken from the novel Maya by Ayu Utami. The data uses Minderop’s psychoanalytic theory. The results of this study indicate that there are types of inner conflict in the main character, including: (1) approaching conflict, (2) approaching away conflict and (3) moving away conflict. Then there are also defense mechanisms that occur in the main character, including: (1) replacement, (2) sublimation, (3) against oneself, (4) rationalization, (5) projection, (6) regression, (7) reaction formation, (8) repression, (9) state of survival, (10) aggression and apathy, and (11) fantasy. Research on the inner conflict of the main character in the novel Maya can be implicated in learning Indonesian literature.
