PENGARUH PENGGUNAAN PASTA GIGI GAMBIR (Uncaria gambir Roxb.) TERHADAP JUMLAH KOLONI BAKTERI SALIVA
Background: The imbalance of bacteria in oral cavity is one of the main factors causing dental caries. Oral bacteria can form plaque and lower the pH of the oral cavity, which eventually lead to caries. Brushing teeth with toothpaste is an effective plaque control method. Toothpaste that contains antibacterial agents is needed to reduce the number of bacteria in the oral cavity. Gambir has been reported to contain catechin and tannin, which are antibacterial agents. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of using gambir (Uncaria gambir Roxb.) on salivary bacterial colonies number. Methods: An experimental study with a pre-post control group design consisted of gambir toothpaste group and fluoride toothpaste group. The subject of this study were 32 students of BKGM FK UNSRI who had adapted to brushing teeth with Bass technique for 21 days. Sample of 2 mL saliva was taken before and after brushing teeth with the toothpaste. Samples were cultured and the number of bacterial colonies was counted with total plate count (TPC) method. The data were analyzed by paired t test and unpaired t test. Results: The mean number of salivary bacterial colonies before and after using toothpaste in both groups decreased significantly (p0,05) in both groups. Conclusion: Gambir toothpaste had an effect on salivary bacterial colonies number because of its antibacterial properties.
