Introduction. Laryngopharyngeal reflux is an inflammatory response of the mucous membranes of the pharynx, larynx, and other respiratory organs caused by reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus.1 One of the instruments that can be used to diagnose LPR is the reflux symptom index.2 This instrument can accurately document symptoms by using 9 questions that were filled in independently by the patient.2,3 LPR has many risk factors, some of these factors include: smoking,4 spicy food consumption habits,5 and high BMI.6 The purpose of this study is to determine the correlation between risk factors and reflux symptom index in laryngopharyngeal reflux patients at department ENT Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital in Palembang. Method. This study used an analytic observational research method with a cross-sectional design (one-time data collection). Total sampling method is used to determine semple. This research found sample of 22 data that meets the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The processed data is secondary data in the form of patient medical records. Statistical analysis that used is independent t-test. Results. Of the 22 LPR patients, the largest group was 35–49 years old with a total sample of 11 (50%). There were 4 men (18.2%) and 18 women (81.8%). The data were dominated by 19 non-smoker patients (86.4%). Patients with the habit of consuming spicy food were 14 people (63.6%). Patients with normal weight and above normal weight were 11 people (50%) for each group. No significant relation was found between smoking habits and the RSI score (p value = 0.076). No significant relation was found between the habit of consuming spicy food and the RSI score (p value = 0.107). There is a significant relation between weight classification and the RSI score (p value = 0.034). Conclusion. There was a significant relation between the risk factors of weight classification with RSI score, but no significant relation was found between the risk factors of smoking habits and the habit of consuming spicy food with RSI score. Keywords: Risk factors, Reflux symptom index, Laryngopharyngeal Reflux
