PENGARUH MINUMAN KOPI INSTAN TERHADAP FRIKSI KAWAT STAINLESS STEEL DAN NIKEL TITANIUM
Stainless steel and nickel-titanium wires were the two most commonly used orthodontic wires clinically because they possessed low friction and good corrosion resistance. The oral cavity could actively expose orthodontic wires to various foods and drinks, which could cause corrosion. Instant coffee was a popular beverage among patients who had fixed orthodontic appliances and could induce corrosion. Purpose : This study aimed to determine the effect of instant coffee drinks on the friction of stainless steel and nickel-titanium wires. Methods : Twelve stainless steel wires and twelve nickel-titanium wires with a round diameter of 0.018 inches and a length of 10 cm were immersed in a solution of instant coffee and artificial saliva (Control) for 7.5 and 10 hours. The magnitude of the friction force was measured using the Universal Testing Machine (UTM). The data were analyzed using the Independent T-Test. Results : There was a significant difference in the magnitude of the friction force between the stainless steel wires immersed in the instant coffee solution for 10 hours compared to immersion in artificial saliva. Conclusion : There was an effect of instant coffee drinks on the friction of stainless steel wires. Keywords: Instant coffee, artificial saliva, friction, stainless steel wire, nickel- titanium wire.
