THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT AND STUDENTS’ ENGLISH LEARNING ACHIEVEMENT AT SMP NEGERI 9 PALEMBANG
The objective of this study was to investigate whether or not there was a significant correlation between parental involvement and the English learning achievement of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 9 Palembang. The method of this study was quantitative method and the techique used was correlation technique. The sample of this study was 342 students in the eighth grade. The instruments of this study were a Parental Involvement Questionnaire and a documentation study of student grades in the first semester report cards for the 2022/2023 academic year, analyzed by using Pearson Product-Moment Correlation in SPSS 26. The first finding shows that most students of SMP Negeri 9 Palembang have a high parental involvement. Second, it shows that the level of learning achievement of eighth grade is high. Last, it shows that there is a significant correlation between parental involvement and students’ English learning achievement. It proved by the p-value (0.000) which smaller than the significant level (0.05). It considered that null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. Moreover, the correlation coefficient was 0.653 which means there is a moderate correlation between parental involvement and students’ English learning achievement. The higher the involvement of parents in their children's education, the higher the student achievement. Therefore, one of the factors that influence the English achievement of eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 9 Palembang is the involvement of parents.
