Children with mental retardation have a low level of learning limitations so they will have difficulty understanding lessons. Therefore, teachers must understand the communication patterns needed by mentally retarded students in learning so that they can easily understand what is conveyed. This research is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The purpose of this study was to find out the Instructional communication patterns that were applied between teachers and students in the teaching and learning process of mentally retarded children at SMPLB Level I Negeri Prabumulih. Data collection techniques were carried out by observation and in-depth interviews with selected informants as well as documentation of observation notes in the field. The theory used in this study is the Symbolic Interaction Theory put forward by George Herbert Mead (1969) because the research object itself is a mentally retarded person who communicates using verbal (language) and nonverbal (symbol) communication. Based on the results of the research conducted, that in instructional communication teacher communication to mentally retarded students at the Prabumulih State SLB is carried out through several stages. First, opening lessons is carried out h a humanist approach. Second, the delivery of material in class is carried out using a conceptual approach. Third, giving assignments in the form of self-development. Fourth, closing the class by concluding the material that has been presented. Teaching and learning activities at SLB have been carried out optimally according to the abilities of students with special needs.
