Papaya (Carica papaya L.) has long been known and cultivated in Indonesia and is highly popular among the local community. This study aims to assess the quality and characteristics of the land, evaluate the actual and potential land suitability classes, and determine the available nutrient content and appropriate fertilization recommendations for papaya cultivation. The research was conducted from October to November 2022 at the experimental garden of Taman Firdaus, Sriwijaya University. The detailed survey method was employed using base maps at scales of 1:5,000 and 1:2,500. The study area covered ± 6 hectares. The sampling locations were determined using a grid method, resulting in 6 sample points, each representing ± 1 hectare. Data collection involved field observations, sample collection, and laboratory analysis. The study revealed that there are several land qualities and characteristics that are highly suitable (S1) for papaya cultivation. The assessment of actual land suitability showed that samples 1, 2, and 4 had S3-wa, rc, nr, na suitability classes, with limiting factors being rainfall, air humidity, soil texture, pH, K2O content, and P2O5 content. Meanwhile, samples 3, 5, and 6 had S3-wa, rc, nr, na suitability classes with limiting factors including rainfall, air humidity, soil texture, pH, CEC, K2O content, and P2O5 content. Through specific improvement efforts, the land suitability has the potential to increase to S3-wa, nr class, with the remaining limiting factors being only rainfall, air humidity, and texture. Through improvement efforts such as liming and fertilizer application according to recommendations, it can address soil nutrient issues in the research area and optimize the growth of papaya plants.
