Improving Students Reading Achievement of Seventh Grade Students of SMP Negeri 7 Palembang by Using Concept Cartoon
The objectives of this study were to find out whether or not there was any significantdifference in reading achievement of the seventh grade students SMP Negeri 7 Palembang who were taught by using concept cartoon and than of the students who were not and to find out the students’ perception toward on the use of concept cartoon. The method used an experimental method. The population was seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 7 Palembang, in academic year 2012/2013 with a total number of 200 students. And the total number of sample was 40 students. In taking a sample the writer used purposive sampling technique. The sample divided in two groups: (1) 20 students in experimental group and (2) 20 students in control group. The data were obtained by means of reading test and the questionnaire. In this study the reading test was administrated the pre – test and post test, the test was given to know the students’ reading achievement before and after treatment. It was found that t- obtained was 8.450. At the significance level, 0.05 for two tailed testing with the degree of freedom (df) was 19 ; the critical value of t-table was 2.093 . It showed that t-obtained was higher than t-table that 8.450> 2.093. Since the value of t-obtained 8.450 exceeded the critical value of ttable and the significance level is less than 0.05. it can be stated that there was significant difference in reading achievement before and after the treatment in experimental group. And then, the questionnaire was given in order to see the students’ perception toward of concept cartoon after the treatment. And the result of questionnaire showed that the students who are taught by using concept cartoon tented to be more motivated in reading subject and be more interested in studying English.
