The cultural awareness of the sixth semester students of english study program of Sriwijaya University through literary work interpretation
This study was carried out to know the students’ perception of the role of literary work in building their cultural awareness and also to describe cultural awareness of the sixth semester students of English study program of Sriwijaya University through literary work interpretation. A descriptive method was used in conducting the study. A try out was conducted to 20 non sample students. The population was the sixth semester students of English study program of Sriwijaya University campus Palembang which in academic year 2012/2013 who already took Literary Appreciation class; there were two classes with the total number of 57 students. The data were collected from the two types of questionnaires. In students’ perception questionnaire, there were 10 questions in form of Liker-Scale. While, for the literary work interpretation questionnaire, there were 6 themes of lyrical prose by Toety Heraty, Calon Arang: the Story of a Woman Sacrificed to Patriarchy. Their choices were in form of multiple choices with the meaning A) students think about the grammar, new vocabulary, and meaning, B) students concern to the character, setting, theme, and style, C) students focus on the story line and moral values, and D) students connect the literary works to their culture, social life, belief and religion. Points A, B, C, and D were based from the theories of RRS (Reader Response Strategy) and the concept of Cultural Awareness. The students perceived that literary work interpretation was useful in building their cultural awareness and they could feel their advantages. Meanwhile, based on the students’ interpretation, there were 18% students did the interpretation to the cultural value, social life, belief, and religion.
